Burnby Hall Gardens Heritage Volunteers

The Heritage Volunteers are one of three groups active within the Gardens. This small and enthusiastic team focuses on researching the Stewarts and the Burnby Hall estate, and presents guided tours, museum talks, and short presentations based on their research. They are always looking for new recruits, and anyone interested is asked to contact Peter, the assistant manager at the Gardens at peter@burnbyhallgardens.com
Burnby Hall Gardens & Museum
Pocklington’s unique Gardens have justifiably been called “a jewel in Yorkshire’s crown” and are home to a National Collection of nearly 100 varieties of Hardy Water Lilies, which bloom on the Upper and Lower lakes between mid-June and August.
The Gardens are winners of the Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award and comprise a Walled Garden, an Aviary Garden, a Secret Garden, an extensive Edwardian Rock Garden, a Stumpery, and a Birch Walk, along with walkways around both Lakes. The Upper Lake contains large numbers of Carp and Roach, which can be hand-fed by visitors.
The Stewart Museum houses a fascinating collection of artefacts collected by Major Stewart and his wife Katharine on eight world tours that they made between 1906 and 1926.
Events are held throughout the spring and summer, and include our annual Tulip Festival in May, Children’s Events during the spring and summer holiday periods, and regular Sunday brass band and musical concerts. A café, gift shop and playground are situated on the site. All facilities are wheelchair and pushchair-friendly.

The Inspiration for 25/5
Burnby Hall Gardens, with its remarkable lakes, rich heritage, and stories of exploration, provided the inspiration for the 25/5 project theme, sparking a season of performances rooted in local history, imagination, and community creativity.
Becky and Jules were initially inspired by the story of Katharine Stewart as an untold woman in history, but became even more so inspired by the heritage volunteers passion, knowledge, and dedication to the Burnby Hall Gardens heritage and keeping its history alive.

Support for the Shows
The Burnby Hall Heritage Volunteers have been an invaluable part of the 25/5 project, generously welcoming the Thunk-It team into their monthly meetings, sharing their knowledge and research, reading through scripts, offering fascinating historical insights, and even visiting rehearsals to see the stories take shape. Their enthusiasm and expertise helped ensure the performances were rooted in real history while celebrating creativity and collaboration.

Heritage Talks
At the Celebration Day on 8th March 2026, the Heritage Room offers audiences a deeper glimpse into the stories behind the performances. Visitors could enjoy engaging talks on Katharine Stewart, presented by Jem Knight, and on Percy’s love of cars, presented by Geoff Sidwell. Throughout the day, heritage volunteers hosted an open drop-in space where audience members could get up close to photographs, artefacts, and fascinating pieces of local history, bringing the past vividly into the present.

"Through their help with initial research, engagement with the performers, and presentational work on Sunday, 8th of March, the Burnby Hall Gardens Heritage Volunteer team has been pleased and proud to support this fantastic community project." - Peter Rogers, Burnby Hall Gardens
