'Breaking Ground'

‘Breaking Ground’ is an original devised production created by Wolds Wonders as part of the 25/5 project. The group first began exploring the world of Katharine and Percy Stewart in Spring 2025, when they created an earlier performance titled 'Lucky Dip'. Inspired by the Stewarts’ travels, this piece focused on the idea of journeying far beyond Pocklington and discovering new places, cultures, and perspectives. It sparked conversations about adventure, curiosity, and what it means to learn from the wider world.

Building on that foundation, the ensemble went on to develop ‘Breaking Ground’ using a specially created prompt play by Jules Risingham. This imaginative toolkit offered a starting point for devising, packed with possible characters, catchphrases, props, and scene ideas. Using these prompts as creative stepping stones, the group shaped their own magical show, developing characters and moments through collaboration, improvisation, and shared storytelling.

With support from composer Joe Allen and the brilliant Wolds Wonders volunteers, the company also created original music inspired by the themes and atmosphere of the piece. Songs and scenes grew side by side, helping to bring the world of the show to life.

‘Breaking Ground’ celebrates creativity, exploration, and the joy of making theatre together. It forms a vibrant part of the 25/5 project, bringing together community voices, heritage inspiration, and a spirit of imaginative discovery.
'A Day in the Life' Short Film by Wolds Wonders!
‘Breaking Ground’ is a journey that brings the creation of Burnby Hall Gardens’ lakes to life. The show follows a team of determined workers, watchful foremen, and a host of unexpected companions as they set about transforming the landscape. Along the way, they are joined by cheeky beavers, the ever-observant Mr Burnby the Cat, and a series of hilarious mishaps that turn every building challenge into an adventure.

Through music, movement, and devised scenes, the company explores the effort, teamwork, and determination that went into creating the lakes. Plans go awry, and ideas take surprising turns, but with every setback comes laughter, problem-solving, and a growing sense of community. As the work takes shape, so too do friendships, showing how shared purpose can bring people together.

Full of humour, heart, and invention, ‘Breaking Ground’ celebrates the people and personalities behind the history. The building of the lakes becomes a story about resilience, friendship, and the joy of making something meaningful together.
