A Very Thunky 2023!

Hello!

Welcome to a HUGE thunky round-up of 2023!

This has been a WONDERFUL year at Thunk-It and we are so so so grateful for all of the opportunities; to our funders, supporters and participants for making this a year to remember!

A vibrant purple to green ombré background with stars across to celebrate the end of the year! Team Thunk-It are in the centre jumping for joy with writing across saying: ‘2023’. We hope it shows the excitement we feel for all we’ve done and all that is to come!

We firstly want to share that we have engaged with approximately 1800+ people this year as audience members and participants! Thank you to each and every one of you- what an incredible year we have all shared.

Well, with the main thank yous out of the way, let’s get into it!

We have been a part of an incredible amount of projects this year, and wish we could speak about them all, but to save your scrolling finger from a very long post, we have pulled together a few of our highlights!

‘THE STORIES YOU WANT TO TELL’:

Right back in January 2023 we were a part of a WONDERFUL project in collaboration with Kyra Foundation and York Theatre Royal, also funded by Rank Foundation.

This project really set the bar for our year and we couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity. Being able to creatively explore so many women’s voices and journeys was an incredible experience for both ourselves and our participants and the film we created made us overwhelmingly proud.

We even had a glass of bubbly at the screening, so… CHEERS to a great start to the year!

‘NEW GIRL!’:

“The message in this show is just beautiful and inspiring - I am so keen for diversity to be celebrated. What a great way to teach kids.” – Audience Member at ‘New Girl!’

‘New Girl!' provides young people, and grown-ups alike, an insight into how we can learn about one another and champion what makes each and every one of us unique.

In 2024 ‘New Girl!’ will be hitting the road to take Danielle Webb’s gorgeous story to even more audiences and spread the message about celebrating our differences to schools across the region. There is still the opportunity for your school to be involved, please drop us an email to register interest and have a chat!

This show also includes the use of Makaton, which leads us swimmingly into our next highlight!

MAKATON TRAINING:

We LOVE to provide opportunities for EVERYONE to be able to access a creative outlet in safe, inclusive spaces and we strive to keep developing our team to reach this goal more and more. After all, we believe that everyone has a story to tell, so let’s make sure everyone can!

Team Thunk-It have been working towards their Makaton Levels over the last year and we have successfully funded training for 5 members to gain at least Level 1. We are super proud of this and hope to develop more workshops and theatre projects going forward that can bring our communities together by bettering communication and teaching basic signs to our audiences too.

'Proud to be Makaton trained' is written in yellow and blue bubble writing- to match the colours on the 'Makaton' logo. Emma is stood with her arm high in the air and a beaming wide smile proudly showing off her workshop manual. She is super excited to be able to make our Thunk-It marketing even more accessible going forward!

SUMMER SEASON:

Over the course of our summer programming we were a part of 8 different projects, fundraisers and workshops and LOVED every single second of the sunshine filled busyness. We are super proud to have brought creative workshops to even more communities this year- just wait for 2024, we can’t wait to do this all over again!

We couldn’t not share the smiles of all our Youth Theatre participants this summer, so here is a collage of all the joy they brought to us whilst getting creative!

'Summer Smiles with our Youth Theatre projects'. 7 bright smiley faces collaged together from 5 different projects. The smiles radiate what summer is all about!

‘A CHRISTMAS CAROL’:

Well, we couldn’t skip over our latest performance and the finale of our Thunk-It Theatre 2023 season: ‘A Christmas Carol’ presented by our Youth Theatre.

This was performed as part of the Pocklington Arts Centre Christmas Festival on Sunday 23rd November.

Our young people were all fabulous and we are so glad that this was how we ended our performances for the year.

Team Thunk-It Spotlight on ‘ANNIE CHADWICK’:

Introducing our new blog segment… the ‘Team Thunk-It Spotlight’!

We love getting to know all of you during our workshops and projects, but we thought you might like to know more about us too.

So, first up, we have the wonderful ANNIE!

Annie is a Sheffield-based writer from North Yorkshire. After studying at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama (MA Writing for Stage, BA Applied Theatre), she went on to write work which has been performed at: The Other Palace, Camden People’s Theatre and Northern Broadsides Studio

Annie has been Thunk-It’s secretary since 2022. She organises all our team meetings and makes sure everyone knows their action points!

A black scraggly dog having a lovely chin rub!

Her favourite Thunk-It memory is the team’s AGM earlier this year which took place in an actual barn! (in which resided the cutest dog).

Spot the dog here!

Annie’s latest short film is set to be released in early 2024 and features Thunk-It associate artist Miles Kingsley as a principal role!

Follow Annie on Twitter or connect with her on LinkedIn to keep up to date with her work.

Annie Chadwick. A brunette with blonde highlights, dressed classy in a dogtooth patterned checked blazer and a super wide classic thunk-it smile... I don't think we ever have a straight face!

Happy New Year!

In the New Year we will share even more exciting news, but for now, let’s all join hands and sing the evening away to Auld Lang Syne!

Thank you for this year, we can’t say it enough.

We couldn’t bring these opportunities without the support from you and our funders. So please, keep following us along for fun and thunky silliness and consider leaving a donation towards our upcoming calendar of events via this link:

We will see you in the New Year!

-Team Thunk-It.

Oh, and we know Christmas has been and gone, but here’s a cracker joke that we really enjoyed!

What does a snowman call their kids?

Chill-dren.

(Though, we also think it should be ‘Ice Ice Babies’).
